This is by far the best of any attempt to visualize the classic story and probably the most faithful one except for the ending which is a bit different but this doesn't mean that it was a perfect attempt! The love story surprised me most of all. The shift towards Albert continued the original novel's themes of changing times and clashing views, in addition to altering the dramatic elements by altering character perspectives and relationship dynamics. When Albert blames the Count for his father's downfall and challenges him to a duel, Mercédès, having already recognized Monte Cristo as Dantès, goes to the Count and begs him to spare her son. Monte Cristo was not put on trial, as he is in the movie's finale. Most English editions of the novel follow the anonymous translation. Through the book he shows a deep affection and care for his wife and son.
I thought the entire cast was excellent, particularly Depardieu, who is completely masterful and magnetic as the Count. I am sure I have made Mothman an extra couple thousand dollars because of my recommending it. I learned that Dumas was French and had written many other books. He is a great actor. I would not be able to recommend this film to anyone with a serious interest in the classics film or literature. After his transformation into the Count of Monte Cristo, he reveals his true name to his enemies as each revenge is completed. Edmond purchases Château d'If, intending to raze it, but instead leaves it standing as he swears to Faria to use his vast resources for good. He later purchases the island of Monte Cristo and the title of Count from the Tuscan government. I loved the innocence that she managed to bring to the role, a really terrific actress and a really beautiful one as well.
